Ganesh Chaturthi is a major festival of Hinduism, celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is considered the god of wisdom, prosperity, and the remover of obstacles. The festival is celebrated on Shukla Chaturthi of the month of Bhadrapada, which usually falls in August or September.
On this day, people install idols of Lord Ganesha in their homes or pandals, and worship them for ten days. On the last day, called Anant Chaturdashi, Ganesha idols are immersed, in which they are floated in water.
During Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees offer special bhog (such as modaks), and sing devotional songs. The festival is celebrated with great pomp especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh.
